Podcast Handelsblatt Green: How green is nuclear power?

Dusseldorf Nuclear power – yes, please! This is how the EU Commission could paraphrase the original slogan of the opponents of nuclear power. EU politicians plan to classify energy from gas and nuclear power as climate-friendly. This means that investments in gas and nuclear power plants would be climate-friendly under certain conditions. The Commission wants to redefine the so-called taxonomy. This is a set of rules that the EU uses to determine which economic activities contribute to environmental goals.

The Commission is likely to present its final proposal in the next few days, after which the European Parliament will vote on it. In Germany there is great resistance, other EU countries such as France support the move. The professional world is also divided. In the new episode of Handelsblatt Green, editor Michael Scheppe discusses with two scientists how green nuclear power can be and how important it is for security of supply.

Guest is Oliver Wagner, co-head of the energy policy research area at the Wuppertal Institute, a think tank for sustainability research. He describes green nuclear energy as a misnomer. Simon Friederich has a completely different opinion. He is a physicist and philosopher of science at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and a board member of the Ökomoderne association, which advocates more nuclear power.
