Dusseldorf The Russian military launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine on Thursday. Heavy explosions could be heard in Kiev, Kharkiv and Odessa before dawn. Russian forces reported knocking out Ukrainian air defenses.

According to an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the first attacks claimed the lives of around 40 people. NATO has announced that it will strengthen its armed forces on the eastern flank, while the EU plans tough sanctions against Russia.

In a dramatic message, Zelensky declared a state of war and said Ukrainian authorities would issue arms to anyone willing to defend the country. “Ukraine’s future depends on every Ukrainian,” he said, urging all those ready for defense to come to the Interior Ministry assembly points.

There have already been several air alerts in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev because of the Russian attack.
