Nuclear power plant failures: France pays high electricity prices

Munich In February, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that, in addition to renewable energies, he would “restart the great adventure of civil nuclear power in France” in order to increase electricity production.

In addition to the construction of new nuclear power plants (NPPs) and mini reactors, small modular reactors (SMRs), the state-controlled power company Électricité de France (EDF) should examine extending the service life of existing nuclear power plants to more than 50 years.

However, it is questionable whether Macron’s wish to no longer take a “production-capable nuclear reactor” off the grid will be fulfilled. France’s aging reactors repeatedly shut themselves down due to malfunctions or excessive maintenance work. In the past week alone, outages meant that France temporarily lacked more than half of the 61.4 gigawatts of installed nuclear power.
