Kyiv Four thin walls without windows, there is no more protection. When the sirens wail in the center of Kiev, Tania Chontoroh, as so often, rouses her daughter, who is only a few weeks old, and flees with her into the narrow hallway. The 28-year-old holds little Solomia tightly and tries to calm her down with a song.

Wrapped in several layers of clothing and a thick winter jacket, husband Anton sits down with them: electricity, water and heating could fail again in the coming hours. He puts thick blankets and jackets over his wife and daughter. The IT expert then switches a battery-operated radio to reception using a rotary knob. The charged mobile phones and power banks are now only touched in emergencies.
