After the bans on Bitcoin mining in China, most of the crypto miners left the country and started looking for other homes.
Miners began to operate in the USA, which is advantageous in many ways. Some miners chose Florida, while others chose New York.
While the state of Florida and the state of Miami have been friendly to the crypto industry, some segments in New York state have started activities against crypto mining.
Several local businesses, workers’ groups, and various organizations in New York state have written a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul to be denied permission to use the city’s former fossil fuel power plants as crypto mining hubs.
The letter, signed by multiple organizations, demanded that Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency mining use huge amounts of energy to run computers, and in this context, permission to turn power plants into crypto mining farms should be denied:
Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency mining uses enormous amounts of energy to power the computers needed to do work. If this activity expands in New York, it could greatly undermine the climate goals set under New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
The letter also stressed that the resumption of fossil fuel power plants that are no longer in use could seriously jeopardize the government’s past progress in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
While these events were taking place in the USA, the world economy giant, Russian authorities stated that they would allow mining through special electricity tariffs for miners.
Russian Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov has proposed a new energy consumption tariff to differentiate between general use and cryptocurrency mining.
