Although developments such as the VAR system, goal line technology and semi-automatic offside technology make the referees’ job easier, they are not sufficient for in-game actions. According to the news that the British Mirror newspaper received from The Times, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) is working on a new rule.
According to the information in the news, there will no longer be any tolerance for objections to the referee. In case of intense and violent objections, the referees will be able to expel the objecting player for 10 minutes with the rule expected to be defined as the “penalty box”.
On the other hand, the source states that only team captains have the right to object, and this cannot exceed a certain level of severity. The IFAB will discuss the issue on 28 November. On the other hand, general manager Lukas Brud compared the rule to Rugby rules and told The Times:
We have identified player misconduct as a major problem for football. This will be the main theme of the IFAB in the coming years. We are looking at what we can do through the Laws of the Game or recommendations and guidelines for additional measures.
Contested penalty boxes have worked well at lower levels and some believe they could be tested at a higher level through trials in more senior football. Players may not worry too much about getting a yellow card for saying something inappropriate to the referee, but if they know it means a tenth of the match off the pitch, it can make a big difference.
