Berlin Many Germans inherit houses and land – according to the Federal Statistical Office, the value of this has almost tripled from 2010 to 2021 to 21.4 billion euros. But there are hidden costs, especially in older houses, which you only see at second glance.

Because in Germany there is the so-called renovation obligation, which not only affects heirs of houses, but also other new homeowners. Specifically, the Building Energy Act (GEG) stipulates that old, inefficient heating systems must be replaced when there is a change of ownership if the old owner has not yet done so.
