ETH Foundation’s latest statement Ethereum Merge has announced that the testnet Kiln will be shutting down on September 12.
Ethereum Foundation Announces Pre-Update Merge Testnet Will Be Shut Down
In addition, the Ropsten and Rinkeby testnets will also be retired and shut down in Q4 of 2022 and Q3 of 2023, respectively, after the update.
The ETH Foundation announced in an official announcement on September 9 that the Kiln testnet will be shut down next week as it is now deprecated. Testnet Kiln was launched in early 2022 to test Ethereum before existing testnets were merged.
Also, the Merge Update’s other testnets, Ropsten and Rinkeby, will be retired.
While the testnets will remain active after the update, infrastructure providers will gradually remove access to the Ropsten and Rinkeby testnets.
As Ropsten, ETH’s longest running proof-of-work testnet, transitioned to proof-of-stake, user software developers decided to deprecate this testnet.
ETH developers plan to develop these testnets as well after the Merge update.
The developers recommend users switch to the Goerli or Sepolia testnets.
Having an open set of validators, Goerli stands out for being very useful for testing complex smart contracts.
Sepolia, on the other hand, is less used than other testnets with a closed set of validators and requires minimal storage.
The merger will start at 58750000000000000000000 TTD and will make the transition of ETH to my proof-of-stake system.
