Tapachula More than 2000 migrants from Central America made their way to the USA in Mexico. People left the southern Mexican city of Tapachula on Saturday, pushing aside security forces who tried in vain to stop them. There were minor scuffles and a small child suffered a minor head injury, but the migrants continued on their way. After a few kilometers they stopped in a village where they spent the night on a sports field.

The migrants had waited with thousands of others from Honduras, El Salvador and Haiti in Tapachula for their asylum applications to be processed. One of them was José Antonio from Honduras, who refused to give his surname. He said he stayed in Tapachula for two months. “I was told I had to wait because the appointments were full,” said the construction worker. “There is no work there (in Tapachula), so I was forced to join this group.” He hopes to make it to Monterrey and find work there.

In contrast to previous marches, fewer Haitian migrants took part in the hike that began in Tapachula on Saturday. Thousands had reached the US border at Del Rio, Texas, in September. In August, members of the National Guard in Mexico stopped several hundred migrants on their way from Tapachula.
