Mission impossible for Volker Wissing

Berlin If Volker Wissing wants to know how high the mountain of work is that he is facing, then a look at the climate balance sheet of the old federal government is enough: cars, trains and buses, planes, trucks and ships transport more people and tons of goods every year and blow far too much carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air, namely around 160 million tons a year. According to the federal government’s climate plan, in just eight years, in 2030, it should be just over half, namely 85 million tons.

Even if this goal should be achieved in the end, it will hardly be possible to follow the specified mining path to get there. According to the current status, the transport sector is likely to produce around 270 million tons of emissions by 2030 that the federal government should actually prevent according to the law – for example through a radically higher fuel price or even through driving bans.
