Dusseldorf On Thursday, Meta will launch Threads. The announcement of the new app could hardly have been more discreet: there was no press release, the parent company of Facebook only briefly announced threads in the Apple and Google app stores.

But even the small hint made experts sit up and take notice: The short message service could eventually become a serious threat to Twitter.

Threads is described as “Instagram’s text-based conversational app” in the app stores. The social network Instagram, on which users mainly share photos and videos, also belongs to Meta. With its focus on texts, Threads is now in direct competition with the hitherto most successful short message service, Twitter.

Experts give Meta a good chance of asserting itself against Twitter with threads. Led by Mark Zuckerberg, the group has ample cash reserves, a large user base and strong relationships with advertisers.
