Brussels Meta is set to face a record EU data breach fine. It will be higher than the previous maximum fine of 746 million euros against Amazon, said two people familiar with the process. The background is the dispute over the transfer of data from Facebook users from the EU to US servers. Meta did not implement a warning from the European Court of Justice (ECJ), it said.

Meta declined to comment on Wednesday. Comments from the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) and the EU Commission were initially not available. The Meta share was initially almost two percent up over the course of the year. In 2020, the ECJ declared an EU-US agreement on data transfer invalid.

EU authorities, led by Irish Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon, are preparing to ban the tool used by Facebook to transfer European user data. The background is concerns that US secret services could access the information. Meta said last year that the measures could result in Facebook services having to be shut down in Europe.
