Dusseldorf The war in Ukraine will soon enter its third week. And there is still no sign of an improvement in the situation. Dozens of companies have strongly condemned the Russian regime as the aggressor of the war and subsequently severed their business ties in the country.

The question is: Do employees have to support this? Yes, says Christoph Seidler, specialist lawyer for labor law at Kliemt in Hamburg. Employees have a certain duty of loyalty to their employer. “However, employees do not have to adopt the underlying positioning of the employer in the political debate.”

Seidler advises employees to behave more defensively with their own opinion. Conversely, employers should not keep their staff silent. Because that could further increase internal tensions.
