Berlin A good month before the deadline, the majority of homeowners in Germany have still not submitted a property tax return. By December 22, the rate of declarations received nationwide was 46.2 percent, the Federal Ministry of Finance told the Handelsblatt on request.
Around 41.5 percent of the tax returns submitted to date have been submitted electronically via the Elster tax portal, and 4.7 percent of all returns have been submitted on paper.
Because of the sluggish filing, the Federal Ministry of Finance has already extended the filing deadline for property tax returns by three months. Instead of October 31, 2022, taxpayers now have until January 31, 2023 to submit their declaration.
“In order to keep the schedule set by the constitutional court, the outstanding property tax returns must come as soon as possible,” said the head of the tax union, Florian Köbler, the Handelsblatt.
