Dusseldorf Flight cancellations and postponements: In view of the chaos at some German and European airports, many holidaymakers are concerned about their smooth return. An earlier return flight shortens the holiday. Annoying, but not a problem under labor law. But what happens if the booked flight is canceled and possibly postponed by several days?

Constantin von Köckritz, specialist lawyer for labor law in Berlin, answers the most important questions from employers and employees who are late to return to work.

How quickly do employees have to inform their employer that they will not return from vacation on time?

An employee must immediately inform his boss about the late return to work. Von Köckritz advises: “As soon as you find out about a canceled flight, email or call your employer and tell them how much later you will be back.”

Does the employee have to do something themselves to minimize the delay in returning?
