Cologne The retailer Kaufland wants to expand its online trade throughout Europe. In Germany, kaufland.de is already one of the six largest online marketplaces with 32 million visitors per month. The retailer now wants to bring its digital shop to other countries where it previously only operated classic supermarkets.

Kaufland wants to start with it in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic in particular, where Kaufland already has a market share of 13.8 percent in stationary food retail, is an important strategic market, says Gerald Schönbucher, head of e-commerce at Kaufland, in an interview with the Handelsblatt. Online trade there recently recorded growth rates of more than 25 percent.

“The decision as to which countries we will expand into next has not yet been made,” says Schönbucher. The retailer, which like the discounter Lidl belongs to the Schwarz Group, is already represented outside of Germany in seven Eastern European countries, including Poland and Romania.
