“Leading from behind” is a popular managerial buzzword. Olaf Scholz also likes to take credit for setting the right course for the country without making a fuss in the background. In the Ukraine crisis, however, the Federal Chancellor led Germany straight to the sidelines of global politics.

Germany is the fifth largest arms exporter in the world and fails to deliver the necessary heavy war equipment to Ukraine. Germany has the fourth strongest economy globally and, for fear of a loss of prosperity, cannot bring itself to an immediate embargo on Russian energy.

“We’re doing everything we can,” assured Scholz during his visit to London. For real? You see it differently abroad.

Germany is a very strong democracy, says Belgian MEP Guy Verhofstadt. “From such a Germany, I expect leadership that sets a good example and does not lag behind.”
