Rome British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has again threatened to suspend parts of the Brexit agreement with the EU. “We will have to take the steps necessary to protect the territorial integrity of Great Britain and the British internal market,” said Johnson on Friday on the way to the G20 summit in Rome. There had to be a simple answer to the problem of trade between Northern Ireland and the rest of the Kingdom.

The British Northern Ireland has remained part of the EU internal market after the end of the transitional arrangements for Brexit, while other rules apply to the rest of Great Britain. The aim of the agreement is to keep the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as an EU member open so as not to jeopardize the peace agreement for Northern Ireland. However, this created a customs border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. This has created bureaucratic hurdles and problems with the delivery of certain goods to Northern Ireland.

The EU has stated that the UK has a lack of trustworthiness because it wants to renegotiate a treaty it signed less than a year ago. Still, she offered changes. Among other things, controls for food, plants and animals are to be significantly reduced. However, that is not enough for Great Britain. It wants the European Court of Justice (ECJ) not to be able to decide on the implementation of the Brexit agreement.

“We have to fix the problem,” said Johnson. “I’m not convinced that the solutions we see will fix the problem.”
