OpenAI’s popular AI tool ChatGPT, officially banned in Italy. In a statement from the authorities, OpenAI is accused of “unlawfully collecting personal data”. Authorities ordered it to immediately stop collecting data from Italian customers.
Italy’s data protection authority GPDP, OpenAIreleased a press conference for ‘s artificial intelligence tool. According to the statement, the institution accuses OpenAI of not having legal permissions to collect users’ data. According to GPDP, the company also has no means of preventing minors from using the service.
“It exposes minors to answers that are absolutely inappropriate compared to their degree of development and self-awareness.”

According to the GPDP, the company has 20 days to explain the steps it has taken to meet the authorities’ criteria. However, if it fails, the company may face penalties of up to 20 million Euros (or 4% of its annual global turnover).

In February, authorities banned the regulatory agency Replika.ai, a chatbot application. Replika was notorious for users to develop close relationships with it. However, as in the case of ChatGPT, Italy can revoke the ban if the firm takes steps to prevent illegal data collection.
However, there are a few countries that do not have access to the AI-powered chatbot. Russia, China, Afghanistan, Cuba, Nepal, Venezuela, and Syria are some of the countries where people cannot access OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Also, many schools and universities around the world have banned the use of the chatbot for their students.
