Is security of supply more important than climate protection?

Dusseldorf Shortly after the war broke out, Economics and Climate Minister Robert Habeck said something remarkable: “In the short term, we may even have to leave coal-fired power plants running as a precaution. In that case, pragmatism has to beat any political commitment.” The Greens politician would never have said such a sentence during the election campaign.

But the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine changed a lot. In the event of a lack of gas deliveries from Russia, Germany is concerned about its security of supply and may have to hold on to fossil fuels for longer.

In the current episode of the sustainability podcast Handelsblatt Green, editor Michael Scheppe discusses with Simon Müller, director of the think tank Agora Energiewende, whether Putin is also destroying the German climate goals or whether the war could possibly accelerate the green transition. Greenpeace expert Tobias Austrup also comments on the subject in the podcast.
