Discord announced that it had taken action against a cyberattack that widely tracked users and archived messages, details a report published earlier this month. According to a report by 404 Media, it was claimed that users and messages were monitored by bots, meaning data leakage, on some of Discord’s largest servers, even for games such as Minecraft and Among Us.
Discord about data leak: “Our security team is investigating meticulously”
More than 4 billion public messages collected by these bots on some of Discord’s largest servers, including user voice data, spanned messages from 620 million users, according to the report.
This data was later offered for sale by the now-closed website Spy.pet – for as little as $5. The website advertised the data as being used to train companies’ artificial intelligence models or as “federal agents looking for a new source of intelligence.”
Discord stated that it has banned these responsible accounts and will take legal action:
“Our security team is thoroughly investigating this activity and we have identified specific accounts that we believe are associated with the Spy.pet website and have subsequently banned them. According to our investigation, these accounts had accessed Discord servers where anyone could easily access open or accessible invitation links to join. In these domains, these accounts only had access to the same information as any other user on these servers.”
While Discord has no statement that private messages or personal data users share on their profiles are not at risk, user safety concerns have been raised due to the owner of Spy.Pet allegedly being a member of harassment forum Kiwi Farms.
