Is Russia turning the gas tap to force Nord Stream 2 to go into operation?

Sergej Sumlenny, former head of the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s office in Ukraine, sees it similarly. Putin refuses to sell more gas through Ukraine. “Ukraine warned against this, and Angela Merkel deliberately ignored it,” Sumlenny recently criticized in the “Tagesspiegel”.

But does the thesis that the Russians are deliberately holding back gas in order to be able to put the controversial Baltic Sea pipeline into operation stand up to closer scrutiny? Scientists, industry experts and market players are cautious. There are a number of arguments in favor of the Russians not being perpetrators, but rather victims themselves. Nevertheless, the situation plays into their hands.
