In war we can no longer believe our eyes

deepfakes

During the Ukraine war, many digitally manipulated images and videos surfaced.

Dusseldorf With a serious expression and a calm voice, Volodymyr Zelenskiy speaks into the camera. In his typical army outfit, the Ukrainian President makes an astonishing statement: he calls on his people and his army to surrender.

The video, just over a minute long, surfaced on news website Channel 24 last Wednesday, a credible source in Ukraine. It then spread like wildfire on Facebook, Instagram or Telegram.

A day later, the Facebook parent company Meta took it off the internet. It is a “deepfake video”, as Nathaniel Gleicher, head of security at Meta, said: “President Selenski never made these statements.” Hackers apparently placed the video on the Channel 24 television station.

The manipulated Zelenski speech is just one example of the many photos and videos that are more or less obviously fake in the Ukraine war. The International Fact Checking Network (IFCN) has already counted 700 pieces of false information in videos, images and texts.
