According to the report shared by Hive Systems, using only numbers in password selection is quite risky. Even if you have an 11-digit password, it only takes seconds to crack. So if you have a security lock below 8 digits, hackers can get your password in a few seconds.
Similarly, if you only use lowercase letters when creating your password and it’s between 4 and 8 digits, it can be hacked instantly. In fact, it will be cracked in 10 seconds if it is a 9-digit password, in 4 minutes if it is 10-digit, and in 2 hours if it is 11-digit.
Of course, the development in technology has a great effect on the shortening of these periods. Because when we look at the report for 2020, we see that the hardest 8-digit passwords were cracked in 8 hours, and in 2022, the same password was cracked in just 39 minutes.
According to the study, if you have a password under 8 digits, even if it consists of uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers, it is captured in just a few seconds. But when you add a symbol like “,*,-,/,+,?,=,& to this password, the cracking time is 70 times longer.
In fact, according to Hive Systems, if you have an 8-digit password (consisting of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters), adding 2 symbols to this password increases the time it takes to crack by hackers from 2 minutes to 5 months. If you add one more symbol to it, you get a very strong password that can be cracked in 34 years.
Of course, the rate of development of technology should also be taken into account. Because it took 5 years to crack the password, which was said to be only crackable in 5 months, with the technology of 2020. Therefore, the password that hackers say can only be captured in 34 years, may be at a point where it can be cracked in 3 months by 2025.
However, choosing a password of at least 10-11 digits and consisting of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols can provide you peace of mind, compared to 8-digit passwords that can be cracked in a few seconds. Because although technology develops at a rapid pace, it will keep your data safe for a long time.
