Vienna According to a media report, the UN Atomic Energy Agency found uranium in Iran that had been enriched almost to a degree of purity suitable for weapons. The Bloomberg agency reported on Sunday, citing two high-ranking diplomats, that the IAEA is now trying to find out how the enrichment to 84 percent came about.

About 90 percent is required to build atomic bombs. The material may have been caused by technical problems in the operation of the centrifuges, it said, citing one of the diplomats. This has already happened in the past.

The IAEA said on Twitter late in the evening that it was aware of recent media reports on enrichment. The results of the latest tests are being discussed with the government in Tehran. Iran has been enriching uranium to a purity level of 60 percent since April 2021. The Islamic Republic denies the accusation that it wants to build nuclear weapons.
