How Zeiss is defining the future of chips

Oberkochen In the middle of the decade, at least according to the plans, the next generation should be ready. 100 billion transistors should then fit on a single chip – twice as many as on today’s most powerful semiconductors.

The fact that this will happen is being prepared in the tranquil Oberkochen of all places, a small town in Baden-Württemberg. On the outskirts of the city, the high-tech company Carl Zeiss has erected modern office buildings and factory halls with green roofs in order to turn science fiction into reality in the future.

The aim of their production: high-precision mirrors, with the help of which the mega chips will be exposed in the future. But the preparations are more than complex. Mirrors are ground in clean rooms, each for a whole year. The material for this comes from space research and can withstand heat differences of 300 degrees.
