At the Future Screen Summit held in Istanbul on Thursday, March 10, the achievements of the first six months of the project were shared, and the importance of spreading digital literacy and digital parenting awareness to the general public was once again emphasized.

President of RTÜK Ebubekir Şahin and UNICEF Turkey Head of Communication Sema Hosta joined. In his speech, Mavili said: “The strength of the digital world is shaping the content consumption habits in our country as well as in the rest of the world. In such a period, we find it important to spread the awareness of digital literacy and digital parenting throughout the society and that our children grow up with this awareness. The Future Screen Project, which we have implemented for this purpose, has reached teachers, parents and listeners all over Turkey in a short time. Within the scope of the project, we had the chance to listen to the opinions of the participants and to bring them together with the most up-to-date information, applications and tools about the digital world. At Netflix, we offer tools that make it easier for families to make the right choices for their children, especially smart signs and parental controls. We will continue to do our part in this matter, which is of great importance for the future of our children.”
RTÜK President: “We care a lot about digital literacy”
RTÜK President ŞahinIn his speech, he pointed out that the Future Screen project, which aims to protect individuals against digitalization, is a valuable work and continued his words as follows: “The publishing field that started with the terrestrial has reached a completely different point with the internet, reaching the top with smart devices and digital arguments. Now we are faced with a completely different publishing world. Each of us has a live broadcasting tool or television in his pocket. Broadcasting has shifted from terrestrial to internet and from there to social media. Traditional broadcasting organizations are now adapting themselves to the age and appearing in the digital field. While these are the positive aspects of the digital world, we have to protect our children and youth against the risks of the digital world. Our Supreme Council, which is an authority in the field of media literacy, updates the content of this course, which is in the curriculum of the National Education, with the addition of digital literacy elements. We attach great importance to digital literacy and the purpose of this project is the same as that of RTÜK. RTÜK is not against digitalization. On the contrary, we recommend that traditional radio and television keep up with the new style of broadcasting. Soon, this area will get stronger with new players. International brands trust Turkey and our country’s economy. The dynamism of our nation whets their appetite. Turkey, with its own dynamics, is among the countries that are followed closely in the world.”

Recently, we see that one of the most talked about topics among parents is the safe and effective use of screens for their children. As Habitat Association, we had the opportunity to convey concepts such as digital citizenship, digital parenting, digital security and digital law to our target audience, teachers and parents, in the ‘Future Screen Project’, which we implemented with Netflix and ICC Turkey.” said.
ICC Turkey National Committee Board Member Dr. Mazhar U. Basmacı, on the other hand, touched upon the achievements they achieved and made the following statements: “Youth is our biggest capital. In order to use and understand technology correctly, projects that will raise awareness of its safety in the society, as well as digital literacy, are gaining importance. Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue. The way to safely benefit from cyber media is to increase literacy and social awareness in this area.”
After the opening speeches academician and writer Elif Posos Devrani A panel was moderated. Netflix Communications Manager Artanç Savaş pointed out that the parental control tools that Netflix offers to families free of charge are found useful by 98 percent of families in Turkey. “Our members are able to create special profiles for their children and ensure that they only meet with entertaining and educational content suitable for their age group,” said Savaş, and explained that other parental control tools they offer, especially smart signs and PIN controls, are used effectively in Turkey.
The other guest of the panel was Sema Hosta, Turkey Communications Director of UNICEF, which carries out effective activities with a focus on children and youth in the world and in our country. Hosta said, “With the pandemic, children started to spend more time online. Technology and the digital world offer very important opportunities for children to learn and have fun. She provides important information about their careers. We have the opportunity, together with all our partners, to redesign online environments that are safer for children and that prioritize and protect their physical and mental health.
