How the ministries use algorithms – and what risks they see

Berlin When the traffic light government argued about the heat pump, Great Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak traveled to the USA and made the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) a top priority.

Recent advances in technology have not only sparked a technological race between companies, but also states are vying for global leadership.

Germany seems to be on the outside here. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has so far expressed nowhere near the same ambitions in this field as Sunak or US President Joe Biden and China’s head of state Xi Jinping.

Nevertheless, the Scholz cabinet is also dealing with AI. Various ministries are involved, first and foremost Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens), Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) and Volker Wissing’s Digital Ministry (FDP).

But large investment sums are just as missing as a current AI strategy. In 2018, the federal government finally agreed on a joint program for which 3.5 billion euros have been made available so far.
