The price of luxury watches currently knows only one direction: up.

Dusseldorf The object in the Sotheby’s auction shows the typical features that have distinguished the “Royal Oak” from the manufacturer Audemars Piguet for exactly 50 years. The simple round dial is surrounded by an octagonal bezel, in which eight screw heads are visible. The links of Lot 1’s steel bracelet are easy to see, it’s seven minutes past ten on the clock, the hands are raised like a laughing corner of the mouth.
However, what the object does not show is the current time. Because it is just a sketch by the Swiss watchmaker Gerald Genta. Nevertheless, it is successfully auctioned off. Price: 564,500 Swiss francs.
Shortly after the end of the auction, watch journalist Peter Braun complained on Facebook that it was further proof that the watch industry was “completely crazy”, if at all necessary. Other evidence is not difficult to find. Records at auctions are the rule, not the exception.
