How is the Ukraine war shifting the global balance of power?

Dusseldorf Whether in the USA, India, Turkey or China: Russia’s war against Ukraine is shifting the global balance of power. On the one hand, Ukraine, as a new candidate for accession, is moving ever closer to the EU, while bloc formation and strengthening of cooperation on the part of the G7 and NATO member states is taking place.

At the same time, Russia under Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is increasingly focusing on its partnership with China. On Wednesday, Putin even received the top Chinese foreign politician, Wang Yi, in the Kremlin. Other states like India or Turkey are trying to combine the best of both worlds.

What are the biggest shifts in the global balance of power since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022? Which states and regions have gained geopolitical influence? And: Will the world now be permanently less secure? Hosts Nicole Bastian and Mareike Müller discuss these topics with security policy expert Stefanie Babst.

According to Babst, February 24, 2022 showed what strategic preparatory work Russia had done. The partnerships with India and China, for example, have paid off. Vladimir Putin knows states around him that are quite willing to tolerate the Russian war of aggression – and that also do not participate in economic sanctions.
