Berlin In the Bundestag debate on Wednesday morning, it was the opposition leader who poured scorn on Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck. Habeck, CDU leader Friedrich Merz scoffed, appeared “helpless”. Yes, in an existential crisis, the Chancellor could not in all seriousness “leave the country to a Federal Minister of Economics” who was surrounded by environmental policy lobbyists.

On Wednesday afternoon it became seriously problematic for Habeck. The energy company Eon made it clear that it didn’t think much of Habeck’s conclusions from the nuclear stress test. The minister’s conclusions, the head of the Eon subsidiary Preussen Elektra informed Secretary of State for Energy Patrick Graichen in a letter, are not technically feasible.

That was more to the substance than a blasphemous opposition leader. And so Robert Habeck, the shooting star of the traffic light cabinet for months, finds himself in an unusual role: he has to defend himself and his politics. On top of that, there was an unfortunate television appearance on Tuesday evening.
