How AI is changing warfare

New York, Berlin, San Francisco Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving into the military – but that’s not to say what the cinema fears. “The self-learning killer from Terminator scenarios doesn’t exist and we’re doing everything we can not to create it,” says Peter Stütz. At the Bundeswehr University in Neubiberg near Munich, he is a professor of aeronautical engineering and an expert in AI in sensor technology.

Nevertheless, artificial intelligence is in the process of becoming a powerful technology for warfare. Even the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine could in retrospect go down in history as an AI war.

The fact that the public debate is primarily about Western tanks and ammunition belies the importance of artificially intelligent software systems for defense. And these systems learn something new every day.
