Berlin Prefabricated bathrooms float as a room module by crane onto the construction site in Berlin-Köpenick. Wall and ceiling parts also arrive prefabricated. In just 16 months of construction, two new buildings with 66 apartments for singles, couples and families are being built.
In the neighboring district of Neukölln, an apartment building with 105 student apartments, each with its own bathroom and mini-kitchen, was built using a modular design. A “Learning Lounge” is signposted on the ground floor.
Both projects come from a framework agreement concluded in 2018 by the Federal Ministry of Building, the Central Association of the Housing Industry (GdW) and the Main Association of the German Construction Industry.
What sounds cumbersome is particularly beneficial for public companies because not every project has to be put out to tender throughout Europe. Instead, the approximately 3,000 GdW member companies can choose the right one for them from a catalog of approved construction projects. In this way, the lead times are shortened. A new edition of such a framework agreement has just been launched, for which bidders can apply until April 10th.
