In the Turkish automotive market, second-hand vehicle prices exceeded new prices during the year. In fact, the automobile has turned into an investment tool. While the market returned to normal with the measures implemented by the Ministry of Commerce, vehicle availability also stabilized. The 2023 automotive market data of the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) was announced at the ODMD Gladiator Awards Ceremony held in Istanbul.
Automobile sales broke a record in 2023!
According to ODMD data, Turkey’s total automobile and light commercial vehicle market grew by 57.4 percent on an annual basis in 2023. Thus, 1 million 232 thousand 635 sales were achieved, exceeding the 1 million mark for the first time in the sector. Previously, the highest sales were made in 2016 with 983 thousand 720 units.
In the January-December period of 2023, automobile sales increased by 63.2 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 967 thousand 341 units, and light commercial vehicle sales increased by 39.2 percent, reaching 265 thousand 294 units.

Automobile and light commercial vehicle market broke a record in December 2023
- The automobile and light commercial vehicle market in December 2023 increased by 37.7 percent compared to December 2022, reaching 158 thousand 653 units.
- In December 2023, automobile sales increased by 45.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 126 thousand 416 units, while the light commercial vehicle market increased by 13.3 percent, reaching 32 thousand 237 units.

The automobile and light commercial vehicle market grew by 36.7 percent on the 10-year December average. This figure increased by 44.3 percent in automobile sales and 13.1 percent in light commercial vehicle sales.
Rates by automobile segments
89 percent of the market consists of vehicles in segments A, B and C, which have low tax rates. While C segment cars had a 56.1 percent share with 542 thousand 432 units, B segment cars had a 32 percent share with 309,987 units.
Sales by body type
When looked at by body type, the most preferred body type was SUV cars. SUVs are followed by sedans and hatchbacks.
Sales figures by engine type
Gasoline vehicles were the most sold in the automobile market. When looking at automobile sales by engine type, gasoline car sales had a share of 66.8 percent with 646 thousand 385 units. While diesel car sales had a share of 13.8 percent with 133 thousand 374 units, the share of autogas car sales was 1.1 percent with 10 thousand 599 units.
While it had a 10.8 percent share in hybrid car sales with 104 thousand 804 units, electric car sales reached 7.5 percent with 72 thousand 179 units.
TOGG broke a record in electric vehicle sales
Togg delivered 6 thousand 11 units of T10X to users last month, and a total of 19 thousand 583 units from May 2023, when it started selling, until the end of 2023. Togg is at the top of electric car sales. Tesla, on the other hand, made 12 thousand 150 sales. In the ODMD report, it was noted that Tesla’s data was determined as an estimate in the light of public statements.
