Here are Ukraine’s odds against Russia’s new tactics

After the failure of its first wave of attacks against the capital Kyiv, Russia has begun the offensive on the east and south of Ukraine that has been expected for days. The front line is longer than 400 kilometers.

How could the war develop now?

Margarete Klein’s prognosis sounds bleak. “The war is becoming more and more brutal,” says the military and Russia expert at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin. She expects the Russian army to first bomb large areas of Ukrainian cities and bases and then aim to gain large areas of territory.

Then Ukrainian cities in the Donbass and later also in the south could be surrounded and besieged. “We must also expect that we will see images like the one in Butscha more frequently as part of psychological warfare,” says Klein.
