Heavy fighting in the center of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut

Strack-Zimmermann for delivery of Polish MiG-29 to Ukraine

The FDP defense politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has spoken out in favor of giving Poland approval for the delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. “We should definitely approve that,” said the chairwoman of the Bundestag Defense Committee on Thursday in the Malian city of Gao. This should be “done by all means”. It’s about five machines.

The FDP defense politician does not fear that such a decision would draw Germany into the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. “The MiG is not a German fighter aircraft, but it works air-to-air. This means that it is suitable for parrying Russian aircraft attacks under certain circumstances. That’s what it’s built for.” Something else would be the delivery of aircraft that could have an impact far into the Russian region, said Strack-Zimmermann. “That’s exactly what we don’t want.”

The FDP politician expects approval from the federal government. “I’m assuming that the Federal Chancellery won’t get any cardiac arrhythmias. And if so, we will support you so that your heart beats calmly again,” she said.

Strack-Zimmermann accompanies Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) on his trip to Africa. He announced in Gao that the federal government would decide this Thursday whether to allow Poland to pass on the MiG-29 fighter jets from former stocks of the GDR’s National People’s Army.
