Berlin It was only this year that Health Minister Karl Lauterbach had to raise health insurance contributions to a new record high – much to the annoyance of employees and employers. This development is likely to continue in the coming year.

As the Handelsblatt learned from health insurance circles, the insurance companies expect an increase of 0.2 or even 0.3 percentage points on the additional contribution. The Federal Ministry of Health is also preparing for a renewed increase in contributions. On average, this is currently 1.6 percent, the general contribution rate is 14.6 percent.

The contribution is levied up to an assessment limit of just under EUR 5,000 gross monthly wage. With an increase of 0.3 percentage points, anyone who earns this much or more would have to pay around 180 euros more per year for their statutory insurance, half of which is paid by the employer. Social and employers’ associations had recently warned of higher burdens, since contributions to social long-term care insurance will also rise to a new record high in the summer.
