“Mail on Sunday” reports that 69,000 confidential documents of the luxury company landed on the darknet, including customer lists, invoices, receipts and credit notes. For one or the other, it could be embarrassing – for example, if jewelry was bought for secret lovers or accepted as a bribe.
Among the victims are celebrities such as ex-soccer player Frank Lampard, Formula 1 heiress Tamara Ecclestone and Hollywood stars Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson and Alec Baldwin. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and the prime minister of Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa are also listed as customers of the company.
The Russian hacker group Conti is said to be behind the data theft. The cyber criminals are demanding several million ransom money and threatening to publish further documents, it is said. Experts assume that payment is required in a cryptocurrency or jewels.
The jewelry company Graff (£ 450 million sales in 2019) has informed those whose personal information may have been accessed. “We were made aware of the attack by our security systems so that we could react quickly and shut down our network,” said a spokesman for the “Mail on Sunday”.
