Fantom Introduces Sonic Technology for Scalability

Fantom gained attention by announcing the development of Sonic technology with the aim of transforming the blockchain scalability landscape. This innovation is the result of meticulous research and development, building on the foundation laid by the first Opera network, launched in December 2019.

Led by Andre Cronje and his dedicated technical team, the Opera network marks an important milestone as the first permissionless Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based protocol. With impressive achievements such as maximum throughput of nearly 200 transactions per second (TPS) and accuracy of under 600 ms, Opera demonstrated major improvements in scalability and transaction speed compared to Ethereum’s capabilities at the time.

However, despite its success, the Opera network experienced difficulties during periods of high demand, causing congestion and compromised user experience. In response, the Fantom team embarked on a two-year journey to develop Sonic technology, which aims to overcome these limitations and usher in a new era of blockchain scalability.

Sonic is groundbreaking with its ability to process up to 2,000 TPS with sub-second precision. This advancement also marks a significant evolution from Opera’s capabilities and underlines Phantom’s commitment to innovation.

With Sonic’s unique technical capabilities, Fantom aims to set a new standard for blockchain infrastructure. Additionally, this technology will form the basis for a common sorter capable of processing more than 180 million transactions per day with real-time confirmation.
