Google Pixel models get satellite connection feature

Satellite connectivity technology became popular when Apple introduced it in its iPhone models. Google has started offering satellite connectivity to some Pixel models with the new update. Here are the details…

Google Pixel models get satellite connection feature

A new “Satellite Emergency Assistance” feature has started to appear on Google Pixel phones. When you enter the Security and emergency tab from the Settings menu on your Pixel device, you will see the Satellite Emergency Assistance feature.

It looks like Google has broadly rolled out this setting to nearly all Pixel devices via a recent update to its Adaptive Connectivity Services. We should point out that the new feature has not been activated yet, so when you click on the Satellite Emergency Assistance setting, no screen opens.

The 9to5Google team announced that they can access the menu prepared by Google for this feature via a rooted Pixel. The Satellite SOS page offers:

  • With your Pixel, you can send messages to emergency services and share your location when you can’t connect to a mobile or Wi-Fi network.
  • The page explains that you can call or text emergency services, share your location using Google Maps, and answer questions about the emergency.
  • When you connect to emergency services via satellite, your name, email address, phone number, location, device information (IMEI, language, model, battery level) and emergency information are shared with emergency services and satellite service providers.

There is no information yet about whether you can contact anyone other than emergency services, but the company states that it will share your name and phone number in your Google account, as well as the contact information of up to three people to contact in case of emergency.

The page links to a Google support page regarding which countries support the Satellite Emergency Assistance feature, but unfortunately the page is not yet live. There is also a link to the Garmin Search and Rescue Insurance plan.
