Another Google product is headed to the graveyard. Starting in January 2024, the company is retiring Gmail’s basic HTML view, which allows users to simply look at their emails.
There will no longer be an HTML display option in Gmail
The company updated its support page and announced that Gmail will automatically switch to Standard view after this date, and HTML view will not be accessible. It looks like Google sent out an email announcing the feature’s demise:
“We are writing to inform you that the Gmail Basic HTML view for desktop web and mobile web will be disabled starting in early January 2024. Gmail Basic HTML views are earlier versions of Gmail that were replaced by modern successors more than 10 years ago and do not include full Gmail functionality.”
Even today, when you try to access the HTML version, Google “slower connections and older browsers” It shows a message stating that it is designed for and asks you to confirm whether you want to use the standard version.

The HTML version lacks many features such as chat, spell checker, search filters, keyboard shortcuts and rich formatting. However, it’s useful when you’re in an area with poor connectivity or want to check your emails without slowing down. It’s unclear whether Google plans to add a mode for weak connection.
Google is currently focusing on adding AI-powered features to its products, including Gmail. Last month, the company introduced Duet AI to help users write emails.
