Google introduced client-side encryption (CSE) for Gmail. User information will be protected with encryption when sending e-mail.
Gmail gets client-side encryption
The feature, which was first offered to Google Workspace customers, can be activated by administrators. Workspace administrators will be able to enable the feature by going to the “Client-side encryption” option in the Access and data control settings in the Security tab of the Admin console.
The company announced that only customers using Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus and Education Standard will be included in the beta process. In a blog post about the CSE feature, Google said, “Workspace administrators will be able to control which person in the company has access to the keys, including the ability to monitor users’ encrypted files.” made statements. In other words, administrators will be involved in the whole process of users.
Google announced on its security support page that the CSE feature is suitable for “highly regulated” industries such as defense, aerospace or financial institutions. The feature, which only works in the web version of Gmail, will soon be available to Android and iOS users.
Google offers multi-post mode, signatures, Smart Typing, translation and abstracts, Incognito mode, etc. clarified that some features such as CSE emails cannot be used. Also, Gmail’s CSE feature restricts third-party add-ons from accessing the plain text content of encrypted mail.
Customers can apply to try the Gmail client-side encryption beta until January 20, 2023. It is not yet known when the new feature will come to personal Gmail accounts.
