Berlin In Germany, there is a growing willingness to support Ukraine with heavy weapons after all. The federal government is paving the way for the delivery of decommissioned Gepard anti-aircraft tanks, as Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) confirmed on Tuesday at a meeting with her counterparts at the US air base in Ramstein. She spoke of a “starting signal” for medium- and long-term support for Ukraine.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had invited representatives from around 40 countries there for talks. “Heaven and earth” will be moved to give Ukraine what it needs to defend itself, he said.
Austin welcomed the federal decision and praised Germany’s plans to supply air defense systems and Canada’s armored vehicles. “This is important progress and we’re seeing more of it every day,” Austin said. A contact group is to meet monthly in future to coordinate support for Ukraine internationally.
