Berlin German exports to Russia are falling more and more because of the sanctions imposed as a result of the war against Ukraine. They fell in April by 63.1 percent compared to the same month last year to 0.9 billion euros, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday. “As a result, in April 2022 the Russian Federation was only ranked 14th among the most important destinations for German exports outside the EU.”

In February, Russia was fifth. Russian troops invaded Ukraine on February 24, prompting the West to impose severe sanctions. Among other things, these provide for export restrictions.

Overall, German exports to countries outside the European Union – so-called third countries – increased in April by 4.1 percent compared to the previous month to 56.2 billion euros. Compared to April 2021, they climb by 8.4 percent.

The USA was once again the most important customer for German exporters. Goods worth 12.0 billion euros were exported there – an increase of 19 percent over the previous year. Goods worth 8.3 billion euros were shipped to China, where corona lockdowns are slowing down the economy, 1.1 percent less than a year earlier. Exports to Great Britain rose by 5.6 percent to 5.4 billion euros.
