G7 decides on new Russia sanctions – but the “anti-West club” BRICS could soon grow

Dusseldorf On August 6, 1945, US forces dropped the first atomic bomb in human history on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The city was immediately completely destroyed, tens of thousands of people died. Almost 78 years later, the heads of state and government of the G7 met at this symbolic location to discuss the Ukraine war and how to deal with China.

The Russian threats since the invasion of Ukraine have reignited the long-forgotten fear of nuclear war. With urgent warnings and new sanctions, the G7 countries want to persuade Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine.

In addition, the USA in particular is pushing to show an even clearer edge against China. Handelsblatt reporter Martin Greive, who is reporting from the G7 summit from Hiroshima, explains what that means in concrete terms and why Germany is in an uncomfortable position.

At the same time, Russia and China are themselves working on a new world order in which the West is no longer the measure of all things. The two countries are the dominant powers in the club of the so-called BRICS countries.

And this club could get many new members and more influence in the future. Host Anis Micijevic talks about this in the second part of the episode with Handelsblatt Turkey correspondent Ozan Demircan.

In the market report, Handelsblatt financial editor Andrea Cunnen explains why the Dax rose to a new record high on the last trading day of the week.
