“Fridays for Future” – The whole north on the climate strike – Hamburg

“# AllefürsKlima” is the motto of the “Fridays for Future” campaign on Friday with more than 80 demonstrations across the north.

Hamburg

Around 20,000 participants are expected from 12 noon in Hamburg alone. Two days before the general election, activists take to the streets for their environmental demands.

Prominent musicians also support climate protection activists in Hamburg: Jan Delay, Zoe Wees, AnnenMayKantereit and Enno Bunger are planning performances.

The police recommend to bypass the city center extensively and to use the S-Bahn and U-Bahn.

Bremen

The police in Bremen expects several thousand participants and warns of significant traffic obstructions.

In Vechta, around 100 young people are said to have roamed the streets by 9 a.m. Demonstrations have also been going on since the morning in Burgdorf, Bad Zwischenahn, Rastede, Westerstede, Zetel, Verden, Bremen and Norderney.

Hanover

In Hanover, demonstrators let a life-size whale made of recycled material swim with music and other boats on the Ihme. Surrounding villages such as Hude, Zetel and Norderney are also protest locations.

Fridays for Future

The “Fridays for Future” movement in Germany calls for an exit from coal by 2030 and a completely sustainable energy supply as well as the so-called net zero by 2035.

Coal power is to be switched off, subsidies for fossil fuels ended and the CO2 tax introduced – with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees and complying with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
