Berlin The federal government is taking concrete steps to break the dependency on Russian gas imports. Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner released 2.47 billion euros for the lease of four liquid gas terminals. This emerges from a letter available to the Reuters news agency from State Secretary for Finance Katja Hessel to the Budget Committee of the Bundestag.

The “Bild” newspaper first reported on this on Friday. The funds “are intended to finance all costs for the short-term rental of four floating storage and regasification units”, the letter says. The aim is to secure Germany’s gas supply with liquefied natural gas (LNG ).

The floating terminals, where gas tankers can unload their cargo, are an interim solution. The construction of stationary LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel is planned, but this will probably take years.
