Putin presented his view of Soviet, Russian and Ukrainian history in a long essay last year. He followed up on this in his televised speech on Monday and made numerous allegations against the West. It is a text that will make history. Central theses in the wording and in the fact check:

On the recognition of the “People’s Republics”

“Those who embarked on the path of violence, bloodshed and lawlessness did not and do not accept any solution to the Donbass issue other than a military one. Therefore, I consider it necessary to take the long overdue decision to recognize the independence and autonomy of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic.

I call on the Federation Council of the Russian Federation to support this decision and to ratify friendship agreements of mutual assistance with the republics.
