Berlin The expropriation of large housing companies in Berlin is possible. This is the conclusion reached by the commission of experts for the socialization of the apartments of large real estate companies in Berlin, which will hand over its final report to the Berlin Senate this Wednesday. According to the report, the Basic Law allows socialization – and the state of Berlin therefore also has the authority to pass such a law.

In the opinion of the majority of the Commission, the principle of proportionality does not conflict with this either. The report is available to the Handelsblatt.

The chairperson of the commission, the former federal justice minister Herta Däubler-Gmelin (SPD), handed it over to the governing mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) and urban development senator Christian Gaebler (SPD) today.

In September 2021, a good 59 percent of voters in Berlin voted for the expropriation of real estate companies with more than 3,000 apartments in Berlin. The red-green-red Senate then set up the commission, which began work in April 2022 under the leadership of Däubler-Gmelin (SPD).
