Emir of Qatar wants to conclude LNG supply contract during state visit

Berlin When Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al-Thani, meets Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin for the first time on Friday, he will bring with him what the federal government is eagerly awaiting: a contract for long-term gas supplies to Germany that is intended to make the country less dependent on Russian energy.

And not only that. The 41-year-old has other agreements in his luggage that are to be signed. It is about closer cooperation between the Bundeswehr and Qatar’s army, the establishment of a German Goethe Institute in Doha and the cooperation of the Berlin University of Applied Sciences European School of Management and Technology and the TU Darmstadt with Qatari universities.

However, since Russia launched a war of aggression against Ukraine, the focus has been on the energy sector. The energy partnership between the two countries will be “cemented” during the Emir’s visit, Qatar’s ambassador to Germany, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Mohammed Al-Thani, told the Handelsblatt.
